Freiburg International Club team organizes events, such as travel/film/theatre evenings. A team of extremely committed local and international students helps with general orientation in Freiburg, e.g. finding language learning partners, organizing student tours etc.

There is a possibility of taking IELTS exams (International English Language Testing System) and obtain an adequate certificate at the SLI (Language Training Center) of Freiburg University. IELTS is equivalent to the slightly more popular TOEFL test used to assess learners’ language levels and provides a benchmark for entry into tertiary education institutions (IELTS is widely accepted worldwide).
SLI offers regular preparation courses for the three most important certificates: IELTS (test/certificate at Freiburg Uni), TOEFL (internetbased test, closest place to take the test is Stuttgart) and Cambridge Proficiency Test (test/certificate at Freiburg Uni). Please note that TOEFL test is valid only for two years. The IELTS exams at Freiburg University are taking place on a monthly basis.

|Language Teaching Center||
German and other languages can be learned at the Sprachlehrinstitut - Language Teaching Center of the University of Freiburg :
Courses generally encompass 30 teaching hours per semester (2 x 45 minutes a week, for 15 weeks in the semester) and cost 60 Euros per semester.
Alternatively it is possible to attend courses at the "Volkshochschule" in Freiburg. Courses also take place twice a week.
Books in English (life sciences) are available in Freiburg University libraries. For borrowing books you can use your student card.
Each institute has its own library apart from the main library located in Stadthalle/Messplatz (take tram line no. 1 direction Littenweiler). Opening hours/info point: Mon - Fri: 09.00 - 20.00h, Sat: 10.00 - 18.00 h. Here you can ask about the lending conditions.
To check whether the book you are looking for is in store use the online catalogue. Enter your keyword in the field "Titelworte".
Please note that the faculty libraries mostly operate with non-lending collection. Please contact the librarian for detailed terms and conditions.

SGBM PhD students can administer their university e-mail accounts via myAccount.
Please check the MyAccount Tutorial offered by the University Computing Center.
This tool is also important for the enrolment for each new semester. With it you can register online (see enrolment) and print out the enrolment certificates which you then give to the SGBM secretary. These certificates are sent to the health insurance as evidence of your student status.

• the completed form ”Registration for doctoral study “. Please fill out the form on the computer and send 1 unsigned copy, together with 1 curriculum vitae by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org Please also bring 2 signed printouts with the supporting documents listed below to the doctoral studies program office to Ms. Maluck, Schaenzlestrasse 1, 79104 Freiburg
• a copy of the school-leaving certificate granting entitlement to entry to institutions of higher education (the necessary certification of authenticity will be prepared at no cost by the doctoral studies program secretary after viewing the original)
• a resumé (curriculum vitae) with precise data on the previous courses studied (course certificates and/or transcripts) and the examinations thereby successfully passed
• a certificate or diploma for completion of the college degree (the necessary certification of authenticity will be prepared at no cost by the doctoral studies secretary after viewing the original.)
• a recent good conduct certificate from the police (we have this document already issued for international students and filed at the SGBM office, please drop by)

Registration of (international) students: All citizens of Freiburg have to register within one week of taking up residency. In addition international citizens must obtain the required residency permit (EU citizens need a certificate of freedom of movement and right of residence (Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung ); non-EU citizens need a visa)
SGBM management will help international students with these things (they will make an appointment with the relevant office).

If you are about to be employed at the University of Freiburg as opposed to receiving a fellowship, please make sure that you ask to be issued a tax card (tax class 1) immediately after your registration! The tax card should be handed in at the SGBM Head Office in order to have adequate salary records. Recipients of SGBM fellowships do not need a tax card since fellowships are not taxed!
EU-citizens, please have the so-called Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung issued (i.e. Regulation on the freedom of movement of EC nationals) at the Registration Office, 1st floor.
Other nationalities:obtaining a fixed-term stay permit, please complete the PDF form (you can obtain this form at the registration office) and hand it in along with your completed and officially approved registration form (see above), an invitation letter from SGBM confirming your PhD status, a copy of certificate of your health insurance, a passport photo as well as your entry visa / passport.
In order to obtain fixed-term stay permits, it will be necessary to visit the Immigration Office in person.

Applying for a certificate of good conduct Führungszeugnis (a document necessary for your official PhD registration), please bring your passport, you will be asked to pay 13 Euros of administration fee, the document will be sent to the SGBM Head Office directly.
This is useful for those using public transport as it entitles you to travel on all local busses and trains.
A Semesterticket costs 89 Euros and is valid for six months. It is only issued upon showing your enrolment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) or valid student ID. This implies that you must make sure to register at the University of Freiburg on time.You can purchase the ticket also online .
If you do not have a Semesterticket, you can still use public transportation. There are also reduced fares if you buy multiple tickets but the fares offered are not as advantageous as the Semesterticket!
Note that you are allowed to use public transportation (RVF, not Deutsche Bahn!) between 7:30 pm and 3:00 am free of charge provided you have a valid uni card.
